Reflection on Refresh 2015

I had the honor and privilege of speaking at not one but three workshops at The Refresh Conference this past weekend and spending time with over 1000 people touched by adoption.  One of the most powerful things I saw this weekend was the “You Are Not Alone Video” https://vimeo.com/overlake/review/120615402/c75da2599b.

You all need to watch the video & save the date for next year’s Refresh Conference—February 26-27, 2016.

This year I shared my personal story…some of you know my story. Some of you do not.  But I was orphaned at 15 when our father died under the influence-behind the wheel of his car..my brother was 14, my sister 17.  Our mother died when I was 7.  I shared how trauma has affected me throughout my life.  It gives me a different lens in doing this work, in understanding the journey of foster care and adoption.  Why do teens rage and why teens create drama. I will share my story again next year…to help more parents to hopefully understand their kids a little better.

I also did a workshop on parenting a child who suffers from anxiety and/or PTSD.  Both were well received by parents.  It was truly an honor to give parents a nugget, to add to the tool box.
Each one of you are heroes.  The two recent posts are the resources I shared from my workshops.  It is not the presentation, but it is the resources.  I hope you find them helpful.
